Paul L.

My name is Paul, and I’m just a guy with a family. I happen to be passionate about health, nutrition, and fitness, and of course, my family. This is a place for me to expound upon my thoughts, which are many, varied, and often interconnected, yet more often than not, disparate and distracted. Hopefully by writing them out I’ll be able to bring some semblance of order and coherence to the many voices in my head! Why “The Thoughtful Cave Dad”? Well, why not? We follow the Paleo diet as a family, I’m the Dad, and I tend to think about things in great detail. Some might say obsessively so. And it’s shorter than “The Obsessively Introspective/Perfectionist Cave Dad”! Thinking about details goes hand-in-hand with being an engineer. For me, details matter. Details are what keep me up at night. Details are the things that trip you up when you least expect it, like at 2:00 am and the database server crashes at work! As they say, “It’s the little things that count!”, or, to paraphrase my military experience, “Attention to detail is often the difference between making it home alive or in a box”. It’s what you do most of the time, day-in and day-out that define who and what you are. When it comes to diet and nutrition, what you do daily defines your health. If you eat “just one” donut a day with you morning coffee, and you rarely exercise, guess what, you’re setting yourself up for serious health problems later in life. Conversely, have that one donut only rarely, eating well most of the time, and get some frequent exercise in, and your body will probably not notice the infrequent treat. I’m somewhat of a perfectionist, though I try not let that get in the way. I know I’ll never achieve perfection, but I don’t think we should ever stop striving for it.
